Sean Cantrell
CEO & Founder, PremiseAI
Sean Cantrell is the founder and CEO of PremiseAI, where he leads the development of hyper-efficient foundation models designed to break the scaling and deployment limits of transformer-based systems. PremiseAI builds novel language model architectures and inference methods that deliver order-of-magnitude improvements in speed and memory efficiency, enabling high-performance models to run in settings where traditional approaches are impractical. His work emphasizes turning fundamental architectural advances into deployable systems rather than incremental refinements of existing designs.
Sean earned his PhD in theoretical physics from Johns Hopkins University, where his doctoral work focused on problems adjacent to string theory. He was the first PhD student advised by Jared Kaplan, now co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Anthropic. Throughout his life and career, Sean has taken a deeply interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving, moving fluidly across physics, mathematics, systems thinking, and engineering. He tends to approach complex problems by searching for underlying structure, conserved quantities, and simplifying symmetries—tools that have shaped how he reasons about everything from abstract theory to real-world systems.
Outside of work, Sean loves to cook, hike, and spend time outdoors. He is completing the Tour du Mont Blanc in August and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. During short and infrequent stretches of downtime, he enjoys video games—usually as a way to decompress after long periods of building, debugging, or thinking deeply about hard problems.
